Motorola KRZR K3 - Future phone

Motorola KRZR K3

22 February 2007
Written by Mike Meers

The first in our batch of handsets released at 3GSM in Barcelona is the upgraded KRZR K1, the K3. The K3 is a 3G (HSDPA and UTMS) compatible device, with twin cameras, Bluetooth version 2.0 with A2DP, a QVGA display, and 50MB of onboard memory. The design of the K3 is almost identical to that of the K1 and will be made available in two different shades of grey.

A 262,144 colour compatible 2Ē display is the main LCD on the K3, with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution. Many criticisms of the K1 were on the size of the display (176 x 220 pixels), so itís great to see Motorola listening to the public and making changes!

50MB of shared internal flash memory is made available to users, with support for 2GB memory cards in the microSD format. The 2mpx digital camera on the K3 captures images at 1600 x 1220 pixels, and video in high quality MPEG4 format. 8x zoom is offered for videos and images, and the mini LCD on the front of the K3 can be used as a viewfinder for the perfect self portrait. An additional VGA camera can be found on the inside of the K3 for two way video calling.

One of the major enhancements to the KRZR K3 is the support for high speed 3G networks. Instead of just supporting a UTMS or HSDPA network, Motorola have included the technology to support both types of networks. The K3 is also GSM compatible, although itís not yet known if the support is tri- or quad-band. GPRS Class 10 is supported for 2G data communications.

SMS/EMS, MMS, and e-mail messaging are supported with the familiar T9 predictive text interface. For local connectivity the K3 offers Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 2.0. The Bluetooth protocol on this KRZR includes the A2DP profile for stereo quality streaming audio to a compatible headset or other device. The integrated media player supports MIDI, MP3, MP2, AAC, AAC+, and MP3 audio formats and 3GPP streaming video.

The KRZR K3 is due within the first quarter of 2007, although we may see it at the beginning of the second quarter down under.
