Nokia 6600 Fold - Future phone

Nokia 6600 Fold

Nokia 6600 Fold

15 May 2008
Written by Mike Meers

The 6600 Fold is one of three new devices out of the Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia, and is aimed at providing a balance between stunning and sophisticated looks with the latest in mobile functionality.

The Nokia 6600 Fold is, as the name suggests, a clam-shell handset. The simplistic exterior has brushed metal fascias and a neatly hidden LCD that responds to touch. Available in two colours – pink or black – the 6600 Fold should cater to both genders.

On the side of the handset is a dedicated button, which opens the fold to reveal the 2.13” OLED LCD display, capable of producing up to 16.7 million colours. The LCD has a 240 x 320 pixel resolution and offers excellent readability.

The internal keypad has large, easy to read keys that are suited for one-handed usage and perfect for messaging. On the subject of messaging, the 6600 Fold supports all the usual standards including SMS, MMS, and e-mail messaging, all with T9 predictive text support.

The handset is equipped with a 2mpx digital camera (fixed focus), with dual LED flash for night photography. Video can be recorded at QVGA resolution up to 30fps (15fps for VGA resolution). There’s 8x digital zoom and a secondary VGA camera inside the handset for imaging as well as video telephony.

Multimedia is always a focus with any new handset, and the 6600 Fold supports a range of formats including MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, and WMA. There’s a stereo headset included in the sales package and a built-in FM stereo for when you want to let someone else take over the music selection.

Only 15MB of internal shared memory is offered but there is a microSD memory card slot supporting cards up to 4GB in side. Nokia have been nice enough to offer a 512MB card in the sales package to start you off.

Local connectivity with peripherals can be achieved via Bluetooth 2.0 (EDR) or USB 2.0. The USB port on the 6600 Fold can also be used to charge the handset when a wall charger isn’t near.

EDGE, GPRS, and UMTS over the air protocols are supported for packet data transfer. The GSM 850, 900, 1800, and 1900MHz networks are supported for 2G connectivity with the 2G UMTS 850 and 2100MHz networks also supported. Unfortunately, HSDPA is not supported.

The Nokia 6600 Fold is expected to start shipping during the third quarter of 2008 and should be available for 275 EUR (approximately $450 AUD) before taxes and subsidies.
