Sony Ericsson W380i - Future phone

Sony Ericsson W380i

Sony Ericsson W380i

16 October 2007
Written by Mike Meers

The W380i is a brand new clamshell Walkman handset from Sony Ericsson. The handset comes with tri-band GSM network compatibility, 262k colour internal LCD, a 1.3mpx digital camera, and all the usual Walkman features.

On the front of the W380i are three touch-sensitive controls, the 1.3mpx camera lens and the handsetís speakerphone. The touch-sensitive controls directly interact with the Walkman application, allowing you to skip forwards, backwards, or pause/play your music. When the handset receives a call or the Walkman player is running, an OLED display comes to life. The front OLED display has a resolution of 36 x 128 pixels.

Opening up the W380i reveals its large 262,144 colour TFT LCD display with 176 x 220 pixel resolution.

14MB of internal memory is provided, with support for Memory Sick Micro and, surprisingly, microSD memory cards. The W380iís press release states that a 512MB card will be provided in the sales package. The Walkman player supports most popular audio formats including MP3, AAC, and WMA. Accompanying the Walkman music player application is a stereo FM radio, TrackID, and PlayNow applications.

Bluetooth and USB connectivity options are offered, with full support for the Bluetooth stereo audio profile, A2DP. If you donít have a Bluetooth headset, or simply prefer a wired connection, you can use the bundled stereo headset to listen to music or take calls.

The W380i supports GSM 850, 900, 1800, and 1900MHz networks. EDGE and GPRS data protocols are also supported for packet data access. The Access NetFront browser is pre-installed for browsing the web, and integrated into the mail application is an RSS feed reader. SMS/EMS, MMS, e-mail, and instant messaging support is included.

The W380i also has gesture control functionality. With a flick of the wrist you can silent the alarm clock, or mute an incoming call. If only you could control the Walkman player tooÖ

The W380iís battery will last up to 7 hours (talk time), or 300 hours (standby time). Measuring 92 x 49 x 16mm and weighing 100 grams, the handset will be available from the first quarter 2008.
