live! it with Vodafone

Sometimes, you may think about all these wondrous technologies that are popping up endlessly on today’s mobile phones. When the urge finally reaches critical and you end up getting one of these gismos, there is then the head-scratching process of how to get things working and have your new go-go-gadget-phone do everything you expect it to.
Calling the customer support line or reading the manual is all good - but by then, you may think to yourself and say “was all this worth the trouble?” Probably not…
But what if everything was all set up, ready to go, once you get your handset and turn it on (and it connects to the network)? In other words, you can immediately use all those cool gadgety features without fumbling around with settings anymore… how’s that? :)
Just keep things as simple as possible…
Enter Vodafone live! - the new service from Vodafone that is designed around the mentality of keeping things simple. Alike other markets where Vodafone live! has already become a reality (some of these include Germany, Italy and the UK), it provides users with a simple-to-use graphical interface where he/she can perform the following actions:
- Compose and send messages with photos, text and sounds (the technical term for it is MMS messaging, or PXT);
- Download exciting, colour-based Java games onto your handset;
- Download polyphonic ringtones, which may be one of the tunes from the latest top-ten charts, and exciting wallpapers to spice up your phone’s look-and-feel; and
- Access up-to-the-minute news and information from the comfort of a colour user interface.
For those who may already own a handset that is capable of one or more of the above, you’ll know what I mean when the process comes to make it work with your phone. But with the Vodafone live! service, all the user needs to know is how to navigate the icon-based menu and simply choose what he/she wants. There’s nothing too hard about that. At the same time, I suppose this also gives its user the confidence to further use such features on a continual basis knowing that it’s more reliable than using the phone’s internal menus for the same purpose.
Availability and compatibility
Vodafone Australia has provided an April 2003 launch date for the live! service, with their New Zealand counterpart bringing theirs online at around the same time. Although this new service will somewhat shed new light on mobile phone functionality, there are only a handful of handsets that will be compatible with Vodafone live!
A new handset by Japanese manufacturer Sharp will be offered to the Australian market by Vodafone. The GX10 will have the Vodafone live! interface seamlessly integrated into the phone’s menus removing the need for any sort of setup or installation. Availability of this handset should be sometime around when the service is launched, and a full phone review can be found
Other handsets to support Vodafone live! include the Nokia 3650 and 7650, and Panasonic GD88. The Nokia’s will have an application on the phone which acts as the Vodafone live! graphical user interface, while the Panasonic GD88 will have a similar set up to the GX10 (where the interface is integrated into the phone’s menu system).
iMobile will bring you a full review of the Vodafone live! service once it is available. It’s not too long now… April is just around the corner :)
