Get ready for the latest craze in mobile gaming – virtual dating! Hong Kong-based Artificial Life has been developing “Virtual Girlfriend”, a new game that is said to be the first cyber-affair application.
Remarkably similar to the Tamagotchi craze of the 1990s, Virtual Girlfriend is a subscription based service that allows you to have, as the name says, a virtual girlfriend with an uncanny resemblance to the real thing. She sleeps at night, eats during the day and does a myriad of things that a real woman would do, such as going to the gym and going out with friends. She is sensitive to important dates such as birthdays and will get upset with you if you forget one. She accepts gifts such as chocolates and jewellery, and more than likely get offended if you save money by offering her cheap gifts. You can talk to her using many different methods such as SMS, and she will send you SMS back and even ring you up to chat. She is capable of talking in six different languages, depending on which country you’re playing the game in. The game will also be safe for many audiences as there will be no mention of cyber-sex in Virtual Girlfriend.
Virtual Girlfriend will likely be released in Hong Kong first. With a mobile penetration rate nearing 100 per cent, Hong Kong has the highest concentration of mobile phones in the world. A lot of Hong Kong citizens also don’t have time for real relationships, according to a recent survey taken there.
Artificial Life is also developing the sister application to Virtual Girlfriend (or brother application, in this case), called Virtual Boyfriend. Scheduled for release in February 2005, it will likely have a few changes incorporated to reflect boys’ different taste for gifts, for example.
Artificial Life is in discussions with major 3G players around the world to have the service introduced to customers by November this year. If all goes well, the game could appear on Three handsets by then.
